Cash-for-Work: Restoring Four Irrigation Canals in Afghanistan

In Baghlan province, the Kator Foundation completed a cash-for-work project that cleared and restored four village irrigation canals. Local men were hired and paid daily wages to clear out years of silt, debris, and collapsed earth so that water could once again flow to the farms downstream. The project both restored critical infrastructure and put money directly into the hands of families that needed it most.

Cash-for-work is one of the most effective forms of aid in places like Baghlan. Instead of handing out food parcels, we hire local people to do work that benefits their own community. The men go home with a wage they earned, the canals carry water to crops that feed dozens of families, and the village ends up better off in two ways at once.

This project was made possible entirely by our donors. Your contributions paid the workers, bought the tools, and restored the canals — and the harvest those canals now make possible will feed real people for many seasons to come.

We believe that dignity matters as much as aid. When we can pay a man to work rather than ask him to wait in line, we do. These canals are a testament to what an Afghan village can rebuild when given the right tools and a fair wage.
