Literacy and Business Skills for Women Entrepreneurs in Afghanistan

In Baghlan province, the Kator Foundation has launched a vocational literacy program for women who run, or hope to run, small home-based businesses. The classes combine basic reading, writing, and arithmetic with practical skills like keeping records, pricing products, and managing small amounts of money — the everyday skills that turn a side activity into a real income.

Many of the women in this program never had the chance to attend school. They are talented bakers, weavers, tailors, and traders, but without literacy and basic numeracy, they have always been at the mercy of others to read a contract, count their earnings, or set a fair price. These classes give them the tools to stand on their own.

This work would not be possible without the generosity of our donors. Your support pays for teachers, materials, and a quiet, safe space where women can learn the things they were never given the chance to learn before.

We have seen what happens when a woman in a village learns to read and count for the first time at age thirty-five. She does not just change her own life. She becomes someone her daughters look at and decide to become themselves.
